This scene depicts the early days of the whaling era off the coast of Nantucket. During its whaling days, Nantucket was the third largest city in Massachusetts, with a population of 10,000. Nantucket Island was considered the Whaling Capital of the World from 1800 to 1840. At its peak, there were 88 Nantucket whaling ships sailing around the world. This dynamic composition (the whale wins) as well as the limited color palette makes this mural a unique focal detail in any space.
The original mural was installed into the powder room on the first floor of the historic East Brick on Nantucket.
